The Bottom Line
So if we are throwing out around a 1,000 billion (yes, that’s a trillion!) disposable plates and utensils a year, let’s at least make some of them compostable and biodegradable.
We know it is a long way from southern India to North America, but there are simply no suitable palm leaves to be found outside of the tropics in Asia. And there is no disputing the fact that sea freight is the most carbon-efficient mode of transportation.
Container ships have the capacity to carry several large warehouses worth of goods on a single journey. A recent study by Lloyd’s Register found that the carbon efficiency on a per-mile cargo volume basis has improved 75% in the last 30 years.
And interestingly, did you know that a bottle of French wine served in a New York restaurant will have a lower carbon transportation footprint than a bottle of California wine served in that restaurant?
